Local GEO: Showing Up in AI for Multi-Location Brands

Chatbots keep chipping away at what Google used to own outright. Research, product comparisons, and now, even buying. Local search is next on the list.

Maybe you’ve already got a multi-location SEO strategy humming along. Google Business Profile (GBP) built out, location pages live, and citations cleaned up in every market. Great, that’s table stakes for local SEO.

Do you show up when someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation, though? Does Perplexity put you on its list? What about Google’s own AI Overviews, or AI Mode? None of that GBP work guarantees a yes.

Is multi-location GEO the same as multi-location SEO?

No. Not even close.

Most guides to SEO for multi-location businesses cover the same playbook: Google Business Profile, location pages, citations, and reviews. Whether you call it multi-location SEO or multi-location local SEO, it’s the same discipline, and it works. Build it once, and you can repeat it in market after market.

GEO won’t sit still for that. The sources feeding AI answers shift by industry and by market. What gets your Phoenix location recommended isn’t what gets your Houston location recommended, even running identical SEO programs. Each market needs its own read.

How AI Local Search Works

Before an AI model puts your business on a map, it has to be confident your business is in a specific place, doing a specific thing, with trust signals that make you worth recommending. That confidence comes from entity coverage: whether your name, address, category, and authority points show up consistently everywhere the model looks, tied to the same location and the same category every time.

One place to start: Schema markup helps build that confidence. LocalBusiness, Organization, and Place schema give AI tools (and Google) a structured way to confirm what you are and where you operate, instead of guessing from unstructured text.

But you have to go much deeper than that. Clear structured data is a starting point. The real needle mover is understanding where influence lives in your industry and your market — and making sure your brand is clearly, accurately represented in those places.

AI Local Search Example: ChatGPT Loves Yelp

Remember Yelp? ChatGPT does.

We ran a GEO audit for a multi-location service brand: 30 locations, 3 major markets. We build these audits to find what’s actually shaping the results, not to hand back a rankings report. Here’s what we found: every map ChatGPT generated pulled its star ratings from one place. Yelp. Every time.

It gets weirder from there. Which businesses actually made the map depended on their presence in niche, industry-specific directories most brands have never even heard of, let alone claimed. Our client had a commanding local SEO presence in their home market. Yet, in the audit, they held just 30% Share of Voice there. Even less in their expansion markets.

Strong Google rankings couldn’t buy them a seat at ChatGPT’s table.

What Your Location Pages Mean for Multi-Location GEO

Location pages used to be utility pages. Throw in the address, hours, and a map embed, and you’re done.

Not anymore. Across seven clients spanning finance, eCommerce, service businesses, and B2B, location pages turned out to be some of the pages AI tools cite most when answering local questions. AI models want to personalize answers, and location is one of the easiest signals they have to work with. In a few cases, we’ve watched location pages pull ahead of the homepage as the real front door to the site.

Your location pages shouldn’t be an afterthought. They’re where AI learns who you are, market by market. Start treating them that way.

Is your brand showing up in ChatGPT maps?

Try this yourself. Open an incognito window and type a local, industry-specific prompt the way one of your own customers might search, in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Mode. See what comes back.
Like what you find? Great, keep up the good work.

Don’t? It might be worth a conversation with a GEO agency.

There’s a lot of measurement noise in this space. A few things we think are worth tracking, and a few things we think are mostly theater.

How Native Helps Multi-Location Brands Show Up in AI Local Search

This space is moving fast and moving first is the advantage, but it all means nothing if you don’t find the right GEO agency

At Native, we start with an audit that looks at what’s actually driving influence in your specific markets and industry right now. From there, we build a roadmap built for your brand specifically.

Clear deliverables. Clear pass/fail standards. All aimed at growing your Share of Voice in AI search, market by market. Not a report stuffed with vanity metrics in sight.

Multi-location brands that figure out local GEO now are the ones AI will keep recommending later. If that sounds like what you’re aiming for, let’s talk.
