Tom Wirt

Tom is JNA Advertising’s shiny new Executive Creative Director. He built his career through writing and creative direction at Littlefield in Tulsa then Barkley & Blacktop. I know him as the guy who puts funny words together on Twitter.

What Attracted You to JNA Besides John Nohe’s Charm?

John and I actually worked together before but he doesn’t remember it. I have this need to be remembered, so I went to work for him. I wave and state my name to him every morning. This was also a great opportunity for me to get back to what I know and what I’m good at while getting the chance to make bigger decisions, which is not what I know and not what I’m good at, yet.

Just to Start a Fight, Why Does a Writer Make a Better Creative Director Than a Designer?

I don’t want to start some petty fight. We’re all on the same team. I don’t believe writers are inherently better at creative direction than designers or art directors. Writers do make better lovers, though. There’s no arguing that.

What Makes a Good Writer?

Observance. Curiosity. Perserverence. Restraint. Short, one-word sentences.

Is the Writer/Designer Partnership Still Relevant?

I don’t think it is. And mostly it’s because someone decided it wasn’t so they could look like a forward thinker and the rest of us kind of said, “Okay, you’re right. Don’t want to look uncool.” I think partnerships should be very relevant because partnerships bring conflict and compromise and arguments and justification and that’s how ideas get better and you grow creatively. Who wants the same type of answer from the same person over and over? Mix it up! Blend the colors.
